Some loads are too long for a rear door and too exposed for a flatbed. That gap is exactly what a curtain side trailer fills. The roof and the rear stay enclosed, while the sides roll back on a sliding rail so a forklift can reach any pallet along the whole length instead of reversing in and out of a single doorway. Yard time drops sharply, because the complete side of the vehicle becomes a loading face.

This 3 axle curtain side trailer is built on a high tensile Q345B steel frame and carries a heavy duty PVC tarpaulin curtain that resists tearing as well as ultraviolet light. Overall length is 13,600 mm with a body width of 2,500 mm or 2,550 mm, which produces an internal volume between 75 and 95 cubic metres and a rated load of 38 to 50 tonnes. Three 13 tonne axles run on 12R22.5 or 315/70R22.5 tyres, suspension can be supplied as air or mechanical to suit the market, and braking is dual line air with ABS. The rear closes with swing doors, so a dock can still be worked from behind when that is quicker.

Why Operators Move To A Curtain Body

Three practical reasons the curtain format replaces older body types in mixed freight yards.

The side of the vehicle becomes the loading face

A curtain body is worked from both sides at once. Two forklifts can load a long trailer in parallel instead of queueing at one rear opening, and goods that sit deep in the middle are reachable without moving everything in front of them.

Because the curtain weighs far less than a full box body with panel doors, the same tractor and the same axles carry more payload. Combined with a mechanical suspension option, that keeps the unit simple to maintain in markets where air systems are harder to service.

Typical Applications

Where a trailer of this type earns its keep, from palletised distribution to long and awkward freight.

Palletised distribution

Standard pallets loaded and unloaded from either side, with no need to sequence the load around a single rear door.

Building materials

Bundles and bagged products slide straight in from the side, which suits sites where a dock is not available.

Packaged and boxed goods

The roof and locked curtain keep cartons dry and dust free while the sides still open fully for fast loading.

Long or irregular cargo

Steel sections, frames and machinery that will not pass a doorway can still be handled with the curtain fully drawn back.

Multi drop routes

Doors can be opened to the exact pallet needed at each stop, so the rest of the load stays strapped and covered.

Container style distribution

For hauliers replacing fixed wall trailers, the lower dead weight means better fuel figures on the same route.

Built To Be Repaired As Well As Used

Standard running gear

Axles, brake chambers, valves and tyres are common specifications, so replacements can be bought locally instead of imported.

Replaceable curtain panels

One damaged bay can be renewed without rebuilding the whole body, which keeps a working trailer out of the workshop.

How The Curtain System Works

The mechanics are simple, and that simplicity is what keeps the trailer productive year after year.

Sliding rail and tensioned curtain

The curtain hangs from a rail along the full length of the roof and runs rearwards on rollers. When the load is placed, the curtain is pulled forward and locked down with tensioning buckles along the bottom rail. Because the tension is distributed evenly, the curtain does not billow at speed and the body stays straight on the road even when the trailer is running empty in one direction.

Where the strength comes from

With a curtain body the structure is in the chassis rather than in the side panels. This trailer uses a high tensile Q345B steel frame with a hardwood or steel plate floor, and the 3 x 13T axles carry the load through the frame. That is why the format tolerates side loading with a forklift at full rated load, and why it can be specified as a knock down unit for container shipment when the order calls for it.

For buyers comparing quotes, ask for the axle rating, the suspension type and the curtain specification in writing. Those three items decide most of the price difference between suppliers, and a cheap curtain side trailer that skips them is not a saving over the life of the unit.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask before confirming a curtain trailer order.

Q:1. Can the trailer carry the same load as a fixed wall box trailer?

A:Yes, and often slightly more. The curtain and rail system is lighter than panel doors, so the dead weight is lower and more of the rated load can go to cargo. The trade off is that the side panels are flexible, so loads must be strapped to the floor or to the side rails rather than leaning against a rigid wall.

Q:2. Is the PVC curtain strong enough for daily commercial use?

A:The curtain is a heavy duty PVC tarpaulin with UV and tear resistance, which is the same class of material used by European curtain trailer builders. It resists rain, dust and sunlight, and individual panels can be replaced if a bay is ever cut or punctured.

Q:3. Can I choose air suspension instead of mechanical?

A:Yes. Both air suspension and mechanical leaf spring suspension are available on the same frame, and the choice is normally driven by the road conditions and the spare parts situation in your market.

Q:4. What dimensions and configurations can be changed?

A:Overall length, body width, internal height, side door positions, kingpin size and brake specification can all be adjusted. Tell us the tractor unit you run and the regulations in your country, and we will confirm what is permitted.

Q:5. How is the trailer shipped?

A:Units normally move by bulk vessel, RORO or container. Anti rust wax is applied before loading and critical parts are wrapped, with the trailer secured by steel cables. Knock down packing is available on request to reduce container cost.

Q:6. Can the trailer be inspected before shipment?

A:Yes. Third party inspection is welcome, and we can arrange collection from Qingdao if you prefer to visit the workshop and check the frame, axles and curtain in person.
